In this fifth edition of the Technique of Film and Video Editing, I have added a new sectioncalled “The Goals of Editing.”

As this book expanded through editions one to four, it became a history of editing as well asa theory-practice book on different genres—documentary for example—as well as differenttypes of sequences—action, dialogue, comedy. Along the way, my students at New YorkUniversity and in my workshops abroad reminded me that what was being overlooked werethe fundamentals, the purposes editing served. An article I wrote for Cineaste on Editing forSubtext pulled into focus what I had been including in my lectures but not highlighting inthis book. And so, in this fifth edition I have chosen to fix on those goals of editing to high-light their centrality in the editing process.

The new chapters are about editing for narrative clarity, editing for dramatic emphasis, edit-ing for subtext, and editing for aesthetic purpose. All chapters take a case study approach toillustrate the goal.

These goals lie behind the evolution of the history of editing and make more precise the exer-cise of pace, juxtaposition and the use of particular editing choices from the close-up to jumpcutting. Although there are distinct trends or styles in how a film is edited, the underlyinggoal remains the same—to move the audience into and out of a narrative or documentary orexperimental narrative in the manner that best conveys the editorial intention of the creators.This is why this new section is so important to the evolution of this text. The new editionrefocuses the book’s audience on what editing can and should achieve.I have also added examples of recent films to update pace, purpose, and the means used toedit action, dialogue, and comedy sequences.

I am excited about these changes in the fifth edition. I hope you will be too.

   Cutting Rhythms is about rhythm in fi lm editing. It begins with the ques-tion: What can be said about the shaping of a fi lm’s rhythm in editing beyond saying  “it’s intuitive ”? This question leads to an in-depth study of editors ’ rhythmic creativity and intuition, the processes and tools editors work through to shape rhythms, and the functions of rhythm in fi lm. Through this research  Cutting Rhythms has carved out a number of theories about rhythm in fi lm editing —what it is, how it is shaped, and what it is for. Case studies about creating rhythm in fi lms edited by the author and examples of rhythm in a range of other fi lms describe and illustrate practical applications of these theories.

    Cutting Rhythms begins in Chapter 1 with an inquiry into intuition. What kinds of thinking and practice are editors referring to when they say the processes of creating rhythm are  “ intuitive ” ? Cutting Rhythms  hypothesizes that the editor’s intuition is an acquired body of knowl-edge with two sources —the rhythms of the world that the editor expe-riences and the rhythms of the editor’s body that experiences them. These are the sources of the editor’s somatic intelligence about rhythm, and they are also the triggers that activate the editor’s creativity in cut-ting rhythms. This chapter describes the neurological and experien-tial connections between these two sources of rhythmic knowledge. It stresses the importance of physiology in the accrual of rhythmic knowledge and introduces ideas about thinking physically and using kinesthetic empathy creatively.

  The ultimate artistic objective of a digital composite is to take images from a variety of different sources and combine them in such a way that they appear to have been shot at the same time, under the same lighting condi-tions, with the same camera. To do all of this well, it is important to have a substantial understanding of the technology, because many of the obstacles that you will encounter are, in fact, not artistic obstacles. They stem from underlying technical issues that are not at all obvious to the casual observer but create problems in the shot.

  The designers of digital compositing software have tried mightily to create a software tool that hides the technology so that it can be used by artists, and to a large degree they have succeeded. However, no amount of artistic training will help you to pull a good matte from a bad bluescreen or smooth motion track jitter caused by grain content. Problems of this sort require an understanding of the underlying principles of the digital operations being used to create the shot and a library of techniques and different approaches to the problem.

  It takes three distinct bodies of knowledge to be a good digital effects artist: the art, the tools, and technique. The artistic knowledge is what allows you to know what it should look like in the fi rst place in order to achieve photo-realism. The knowledge of your tools is simply knowing how to operate your particular compositing software package. The third body of knowledge, which is technique, comes with experience. Eventually, you become a sea-soned veteran, to the point where you are seeing most problems for the second or third time and you know exactly what to do about them. The beginner, however, is continually confronting problems for the fi rst time and it takes time to run through all the bad solutions to get to the good ones. This book contains years of production experience.

Digital compositing is a key component of today’s visual effects, which create fan-tastic and exciting images for audiences everywhere. There are now many schools, universities, training institutes, and online training services attracting an ever-growing number of new students eager to join this exciting branch of the entertainment industry. Beyond formal training institutions, it is also one of those rare fi elds in which enterprising people can actually train themselves, then go out and get a seri-ously good paying job. You don’t need a degree from any particular institute. You only need to demonstrate that you can do the work. The problem is it can be diffi cult to get started because so much of the training available out there makes assumptions about the background of the student. This book does not.

This is an introductory book on digital compositing for visual effects. It makes no assumptions about the readers’ background and is written for those that do not yet have a deep exposure to digital compositing or visual effects, but would like to quickly and painlessly come up to speed. It is digital compositing lite, readable by all, lavished with hundreds of fi lm shots, fi gures, illustrations, and diagrams to help tell the story for the visual reader. For those that already have a background in digital compositing, I would recommend my more advanced book on the subject, Digital Compositing for Film and Video, by Steve Wright. Those who would benefi t most from this book include:

• Digital compositing or visual effects students new to the industry;

• Someone considering digital compositing as a career and would like to see what it is all about;

• Entertainment industry professionals that would like to understand digital compositing, such as producers, directors, editors, colorists, and postproduction supervisors;

• The curious, the interested, and the explorer.

While digital artists are invariably smart people, being artists theyundoubtedly paid more attention in art class than in math class. But math isoccasionally an indispensable part of understanding what’s going on behindthe screen. What I did in this book was, first, avoid math wherever possible.Then, in those situations where math is utterly unavoidable, it is presentedas clearly as I know how with lots of visuals to smooth the path for artiststhat are, ultimately, visual thinkers. I hope that as a result you will find thelight smattering of math relatively painless.

Welcome to Autodesk® 3ds Max® 2014 Essentials. The world of computer-generated (CG) imagery is fun and ever changing. Whether you are new to CG in general or are a CG veteran new to 3ds Max designing, you’ll find this book the perfect primer. It introduces you to the Autodesk 3ds Max software and shows how you can work with the program to create your art, whether it is animated or static in design.

This book exposes you to all facets of 3ds Max by introducing and plainly explaining its tools and functions to help you understand how the program operates—but it does not stop there. This book also explains the use of the tools and the ever-critical concepts behind the tools. You’ll find hands-on examples and tutorials that give you firsthand experience with the toolsets. Working through them will develop your skills and the conceptual knowledge that will carry you to further study with confidence. These tutorials expose you to vari-ous ways to accomplish tasks with this intricate and comprehensive artistic tool. These chapters should give you the confidence you need to venture deeper into the feature set in 3ds Max, either on your own or by using any of the software’s other learning tools and books as a guide.

Learning to use a powerful tool can be frustrating. You need to remember to pace yourself. The major complaints CG book readers have are that the pace is too fast and that the steps are too complicated or overwhelming. Addressing those complaints is a tough nut to crack, to be sure. No two readers are the same. However, this book offers the opportunity to run things at your own pace. The exercises and steps may seem confusing at times, but keep in mind that the more you try and the more you fail at some attempts, the more you will learn how to operate the 3ds Max engine. Experience is king when learning the workflow necessary for any software program, and with experience come failure and aggravation. But try and try again. You will find that further attempts will always be easier and more fruitful.

Above all, however, this book aims to inspire you to use the 3ds Max program as a creative tool to achieve and explore your own artistic vision.

دانلود کتاب آموزشی Autodesk Maya 2014 Essentials

Welcome to Autodesk® Maya® 2014 Essentials. Autodesk® Maya® soft-ware is one of many 3D computer graphics (CG) packages available on the mar-ket, and although it has many unique features, it shares one trait with every other package out there: it’s very powerful and very complex. The goal of this book is to walk you through some of the features of the software and familiarize you with the tools Maya provides and how to use them.

Although nearly every chapter in this book provides a tutorial that covers a particular facet of the software, the goal is not to show you how to do one single procedure. In every case, the intent is to provide you with background and con-text for the steps you’re performing, so that you develop an understanding of the procedure and its place within the overall CG workflow and can apply that knowledge to all your future projects. In many cases, the tutorials provided take you step by step through an entire process, ending with a specific result. In other chapters, while there are still step-by-step instructions provided, it would be impossible to take you through the entire procedure. In these cases, the information presented is more conceptual and explains the “why” of what you’re doing, rather than the “what.”

With that end in mind, the tutorials in this book are designed to be com-prehensive but as simple as possible to complete. Many books on CG provide tutorials that are too complex, frustrating readers and leaving them with more questions than answers. The results of the tutorials in this book may look simple, but the process of completing them will give you a solid foundation in creating CG imagery.

That said, you will probably make some mistakes along the way. That’s simply part of the learning process. If it happens, just try again. After all, you don’t learn to drive a car by hopping on the freeway or entering the Daytona 500—you start out in a parking lot where there is lots of room for error. I tell my students that if they have to redo a procedure, they’ll find that the second time around it’ll go faster and the results will be better—and that has always been the case.

Being a web designer isn’t simply about designing websites – there is so much more to be considered. The first step is ef ective planning, the old cliché ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’ rings true in the world of web design. Creating sketches and wireframes is the path to a successful build and the more time spent, the better the results. But this is just one element of the process. With a plan in hand, it’s time to start designing, and there’s a good chance there will be some developing involved. Choosing the right tools for this stage of the build is critical. A faster, more ef icient workflow complemented by ready-built frameworks will bring site success quicker.

The cycle doesn’t stop there – testing is next on the agenda. This may not be the glamour role, but still a crucial element that should get special attention. Finally, no site is complete without promotion: a site needs to be seen to be a success. This issue we have taken the whole life cycle into consideration and brought you the 50 tools you need for site success – check them out on page 40. This issue sees the end of one era and the start of a new one. It’s a big thanks to Russell Barnes who has returned to his mothership and sister title Linux User & Developer. And it is with great pleasure, after being associated with the Web Designer brand for over seven years, that I am taking over the reins of the magazine. Look forward to seeing you again next issue.
